If you set a spatula on the rest, you can still see a little part of the face. If you use one of those bigger spoons that are good for stirring, it will take up a good bit of the rest.
It is made of stone and has a good weight but isn't unnaturally heavy. It feels like the stone cookware when it is new. I have a metal top range and it hasn't scratched the top. You might want to be careful if you have a glass top range.
