(More customer reviews)I've had this rice cooker for 9 years now and have used it at least weekly for that long. I also will leave it on for days with the rice warming. It's durable, dependable. I have also cooked other things in it- leave wild rice in for at least 30 mins after the warming light is on- also have cooked wheatberries and quinoa without any problems. Very easy. Gets a little gummy with the steam drain, but that happens on all of them. Very easy to clean. After 9 years, the inside pot is a little scratched, but rice doesn't stick- I have to say on occasion I used metal utensils and this is where the scratches came from.
I also like that it has 1 button only. You don't have to keep on pulling out a user manual or worry about an lcd screen.
The size is good too- for maybe up to 4-6 people.

(More customer reviews)We've been trying to minimize the chemicals in our family's diet, but for a long time we just ignored the rice cooker (which we use almost daily due to my daughter's wheat/gluten intolerance) as there didn't seem to be any alternatives to the Teflon-style non-stick coating. So we were very excited when we read about this product.
I was nervous at first about the shine and smell of the clay pot (that it might not be as non-toxic 100% clay as they claim). I both spoke and emailed with the manufacturer/owner/creator, but due to language issues I didn't get a clear answer. Luckily I live near a ceramics supply store, so I took it down to get their opinion. They confirmed that the shinny clay was not glazed (i.e. that might have chemicals), but had a "slip treatment" (i.e. basically clay in lots of water put on like a glaze) and then probably buffed out for shine.
In terms of function, it's comparable to other hi-tech rice cookers. The fuzzy programming isn't quite as good as our old one, but it works fine (i.e. you can set the timer to a start time, not an end time like our old one). You do need to mop up the water from the top and lid after cooking the rice. And the clay pot doesn't clean up quite as easily, but it still cleans really well.
Overall, it's all totally worth it to not have to worry about serving additional chemicals with the rice!!!
UPDATE: after using it for over six months, I still definitely recommend it.
UPDATE 5/10/09: after using it for over a year, I STILL definitely recommend it. We did break the lid, but contacted the manufacturer [...] and ordered a new one.
UPDATE 5/5/10: Still going after more than two years of 5+ times a week use! We've had some intermittent fuzzy logic issues (kept cooking when was supposed to be warming), but it only happens once in a while. I know someone commented about mold issues, FYI we NEVER store it closed, i.e. we keep it on the counter with the hinged top open so it always can dry out. Plus I wipe down the inside of the top lid when I take the rice out as it can get really wet.

(More customer reviews)I'm always amazed to see this product still being sold at local Chinese supermarkets and here on Amazon. I've used mine for over 15 years now and quite regularly in the past 5 years. I don't see the non-stick stuff coming off the cook bowl but over time, there will be some small particles of rice stuck on quite permanently. I don't scrub because it is a non-stick surface. I've seen this happen with other rice cookers so I'm not sure you can get around this by just purchasing another brand. You're probably better off buying a softer wood paddle for cheap available at most Chinese/Japanese markets. My dad just sanded off the rough edges of the plastic paddle that came with my cooker. I haven't replaced my rice bowl yet as it still releases rice just fine. Unfortunately, the price is also unmoved after all these years.
Btw, I see inexperienced friends buying large (e.g. 10 cup) rice cookers. This is generally not a wise idea if you're only cooking for 1 or 2 people most of the time since the larger the cooker, the larger the minimum amount of rice to be cooked.
As a final note, I'm not aware of any heating element on the top of the cooker. The cooker is nicely sealed and does white rice well. Like many other cookers, it will also do brown rice well, except that the additional water requirements will result in an excessive amount of muddy brown splatter around the outside of the steam vent. It will automatically switch to a warming mode but unfortunately it does not have an auto shut off. Note that although you can warm for quite a while, the rice will eventually dry out and faster still if you are only cooking a small amount.

The rice comes out really good and it is easy to use. You can cook vegetables at the same time. When it's done cooking the rice it goes into "warm" mode and keeps it nice and warm for you so you get it fresh. It is very light weight and easy to wash. No mess and ideal for a college student or family. It can cook rice for five people. Worth buying if you want a simple rice cooker, comes with a one year warranty. I don't expect it to last years but it's worth buying because you don't have to worry about cooking your own rice and having it come out bad. You can cook small or big amount of rice. 10 CUP RICE COOKER Review

I wanted a cooker for brown rice I could set ahead, by being: easy to use, one hundred dollars less than other brands, easy to clean, and best of all, producing tasty products with minimal effort, including the boon of porridges--rice porridge, oatmeal, you name it-- and rice with extras (like vegetables.) I have heard wonderful things about Zojirushi, but the local availability, and cost, kept me away.
Descriptors, mostly "PROS", below. "CONS" follow, and a book recommendation--
Accessories: Rice spoon, measuring cup, and comes with two instructional booklets (I suspect in response to an earlier review or other customer feedback, asking for simple "English only,") one very easy to use, and just in English. Able to clean, use immediately.
Operation: Read booklet, pick type of rice, measure, rinse as per instructions and your desire, add water up to lines in the non-stick bowl, close lid, push start (also has timer.) It has "fuzzy logic" advanced computer control for cooking accuracy, frankly this non-engineer does not understand its workings, but I am amazed at how tasty the rice comes out. No problems. Notes that if power interrupted, will pickup where left off and should not harm rice, have not had to test.
Settings: plain rice, quick rice (have not used, "consistency may be harder/drier"), rinse-free rice(Japanese product I have not tried), germinated brown rice (have not yet tried), brown rice (have used successfully with short, medium and long-grained brown rice, including specialty brown basmati, Lundberg "Japonica", and combination of the latter with just "brown rice", medium to short-grained), and porridge (have not made rice porridge yet, but it has cooked steel-cut oats wonderfully), mixed rice (meaning rice with meat or vegetables on top, have not used, but have put Japanese seawood and other combo seasonings on top of brown rice in small amount for great results.) Only rice that came out tasty but not perfect was generic first bag of "brown rice" I tried (not long-grain,etc.), came out fluffy on top and sticky on the bottom, did not leave longer on warmer, may have steamed. Would like a "mixed" setting for brown rice with vegetables or meat, but life is not perfect--I did
Clean-up: critical to me, if I can't clean easily, I don't want. It comes with non-stick bowl. Too too easy to wipe condensation after use on body of machine, and clean up the bowl.
Comparison to other rice cookers used: I can't, as this is my first one. I always used the stovetop method, and brown rice has NEVER tasted this good, I have tested without broth or any seasoning and it is marvelous. My friend who feeds her own kids brown rice as healthy food but really does not care for said it made the first brown rice she has ever enjoyed! (It was Lundberg Brown Basmati, no broth or seasonings added.)
Flavor: Outstanding, friends have remarked on how tasty the rice is, we all have made brown on the stovetop (without professional cookware, nor professional cooks ), with varied results, sometimes disappointingly undercooked and needing lots more time.
CONS?
Varied consistency on brown-rice setting with "brown rice" I bought, have not noted with the longer grains I have bought. with As noted above, when I first made generic bagged "brown rice", versus long-grained, part was fluffy and part a little sticky (all was tasty.) I did not note this when I was more particular to use long-grained, basmati, medium grained, etc.
Size on counter, a bit long, large, and the 5 cup cooker's cost so close just not worth it to me, but I can and do make lots extra to share or take to work the next day.
Time to cook regular rice may be longer than you want, 70 minutes for brown rice is great for me because of the flavor, but no 15-minute preparations here, unless you pre-plan and pre-set with timer.
Price much higher than basic rice cooker. A basic rice cooker I understand will do marvelous things, I just never had one and confess to enjoying the "bells and whistles" on this one.
Japanese company but "Made in China": It is a reknowned Japanese company, but manufactured in China, which likely is why such an advance cooker is available at such relatively low price (compared to Zojirushi for example.) I could not find anything this good from Japan or American near the price I paid.
Options galore: If you want a basic rice cooker, this is not for you.
RECOMMENDED BOOK: Amazon has the Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook (kindle edition, too, with great indexing for the device!) The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook : 250 No-Fail Recipes for Pilafs, Risottos, Polenta, Chilis, Soups, Porridges, Puddings and More, from Start to Finish in Your Rice Cooker, by veteran cookbook authors Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann, which has wonderful discussion of different rice types, and recipes such as for Steel Cut Oats with specific measurements in American cups, or Japanese (whichever it is, clearly marked.) Such a book enables more creative use of this timed steaming device which is faster than a crockpot by far, and I have not only enjoyed learning more about rice and gotten ideas, but am looking forward to more exploration.

When I saw this digital pressure cooker I bought it instantly. I loved it so much that I gave one to my daughter, my sis and my sis-in-law, (we're all foodies). I was cooking stuff I hadn't made in years. We ate like kings! All of a sudden, caput. I get online and search and right there on Amazon, Bobby Mac "Micronaut101" describes my very own problem! So no more trying to make the bloody thing work! I call the Cuisinart 800 number prepared to go the distance according to the reviews I've read and I describe my problem, how much I love the machine, how I've seen the problem reported on Amazon and therefore it's a known quality issue and I want a new machine. OK, she says, what's your address? No "did you send in a warranty" or anything else. Bingo, 7 - 10 days I'll have a new pressure cooker. How cool is that? Oh, and "We're sorry for the inconvenience. Have a great day." Yehaa! Let's hear it for Amazon and reviews!
[[editing review as of 6/4/09: pressure sensor wouldn't set pressure and pressure cooking wouldn't start. Cooker would get to boiling but pressure wouldn't lock the cooker and begin cooking. Little red button wouldn't come up to close opening. I would wiggle the button with a skewer or knife point to get it to pop up to close pressure hole. Hope this helps.]]
And I'm writing this so that others who may get one of those recalcitrant pressure cookers that slipped through the quality assurance check can know that they will get a new pressure cooker with the press of the number buttons. Cuisinart has decided to stand behind this one product, at least.
BTW, all of us are previous users of pressure cookers so we really appreciated the ability to sear the meat in the cooker. My family has used the Cuisinart cookbook for the pasta e Fagioli, Cuban Black Bean Soup, Chicken with Herb Dumplings and the "outstanding" Creamy Rice Pudding" And, in fact, the Rice pudding cooked so quickly that my sis didn't think it was done when the timer went off and over cooked it! Her second batch was superb. We also like Lorna Sass's "Cooking Under Pressure" and "Pressure Perfect"

Oster 4715 Multi-Use 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)We received this rice cooker as a Christmas gift and replacement for one broken on our move back from Korea. Immediately, we had issues. I found it almost impossible to make decent, wet or sticky rice without burning the bottom. The warmer feature always burned the bottom, making it useless. After a month or so, the seal on the lid broke, unexplainably, and we had to jury rig it to make it work. Finally, in May, the whole thing just quit working one night. We make a lot of rice and maybe this thing wasn't meant for every or every other day use. I don't know, but I do not recommend it!

3.3c Rice Cooker Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)This product is simply titiled "3.3c Rice Cooker Steamer" and makes no mention of the model number. However, the product page does show the picture of the Panasonic SR-W06PC. It's an older, discontinued product. If you want a newer model, see Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker.
If the product being sold here is the Panasonic SR-W06PC, there are a couple of inaccuracies in the product description. Per the instruction manual, the dimensions are actually 7.9'' x 9.5'' x 7.9'' and the weight is 2.6 lbs. (The PDF manual can be downloaded from Panasonic's site. It contains the specs, operating instructions, and some yummy recipes.)
I've had this rice cooker for a number of years and it has consistently made very good steamed rice. It has no keep warm function after the rice is cooked (not necessarily a bad thing). It comes with a aluminum pot, which doesn't have a "non-stick" surface. However, I've never had a stuck-on problem. The trick to avoiding rice sticking to the pot is to simply leave the rice in the rice cooker for at least 10 minutes after the rice is cooked (when the cook button pops up).

There you have it. Just thought I'd put the information out there just so on one gets burned by a bait and switch. I would contact the seller to ascertain the exact rice cooker model they are selling on this page.

When I first saw the FASTA PASTA microwave cooker internet demo video, I was a bit skeptical but interested enough to purchase the product from Amazon.com. After using the product three times, I can honestly say that it not only cooks pasta very fast but better, with less mess and energy, than pot boiling the noodles. Just follow the simple instructions and you will have perfectly cooked pasta without having to check it while cooking for readiness. I wish that this product had been invented years ago. My ONLY minor negative comments: 1. FASTA PASTA can only cook up to four pasta servings at one time, which makes its use for a large group impracticle. 2. The water measurement lines are a bit difficult to see when water and pasta is added to the cooker. Adding color to these lines would make them easier to see.

I hate that we waited a full month before using it a second time because now we can't return it. The thing simply stopped heating and the indicator lights would not work. I've only had it a short time but have made about a half-dozen batches of risotto and all have been successful beyond expectations except for one batch with peas in it which was a little underdone. The best so far has been risotto con gorgonzolla, but the batches of risotto milanese I have made have also been excellent.
However, I'm still working out cooking regular rice in it. The batches I have made so far have been a little sticky but they are getting better (I reduced the water I used). But since I bought it primarily to make risotto I can't complain too much.

Oster 3071 Smart Digital 10-Cup Rice Cooker Review

(More customer reviews)I have always wanted a digital rice cooker and when my conventional Gaunaurd rice cooker died, the hunt for one was on. I didn't want to spend too much on one (i.e. Zojirushi). My criteria were simple, I wanted one with more than just a "cook" and "warm" setting. I wanted to be able to turn it off. It had to be digital but not necessarily programmable. My husband and I were also looking at the Krups FDH 212 before I saw this rice cooker. The only difference I notice between the two so far are: Krups has 3 setting, Oster has 5; Krups allows delay cooking by 9 hours, Oster by 8 (why Oster didn't do 9, have no idea... wasn't like it was an extra digit); and the power cord on the Oster is detachable, the one on the Krups is permanently attached to the unit.
I was a little hesitant to buy a rice cooker made by Oster because I read some reviews on their other rice cookers where people were complaining about burnt rice. I made rice in it the day I got the cooker and the rice came out perfect, no burnt rice! I have not used the steamer basket yet so can't say too much about it. The lid stays cool. The sides get a tad warm from the heat but it is not hot enough to burn your hand.
Some things to consider but they do not really bother me: the power cord is a little on the short side but it is fine if you have the rice cooker right by the power outlet (or you can use an extension cord). I like the short cord since my other rice cooker had a long cord and the thing was just piled up behind the rice cooker. The owner's manual is a little skimpy. If you want/need some recipe suggestions, you won't find them here. Krups includes recipes in their owner's manual which is actually a book, not a fold out thing.
All in all, I think this is a good buy and a nice unit for the price (difference of approx $30 between the two models I was looking at).

(More customer reviews)Zojirushi sent me this cooker to review a couple of months ago and after cooking with it several times a week for two months, I can honestly say that I am extremely happy with the cooker's performance. Coming with loads of settings for quick cook, GABA brown, no rinse, porridge, mixed, slow cook, etc, what sets this cooker apart is the new Umami setting, which cooks the rice slower to give you a more savory pot of rice.
Cooking on the Umami setting will take longer, approximately 1 hour for 2 cups of rice. It does, however, taste better than if you use the Quick Cook function, which does well when you're in a hurry for dinner. The difference is in the aftertaste of the rice. When eaten plain, there is a distinctly sweeter taste in your mouth after chewing and it brings one dangerously close to just standing by the cooker eating gobs of plain, hot rice.
The downsides include a thick and unwieldy power cord that isn't retractable, a cover that doesn't easily snap shut, and a not-so-non-stick non-stick rice paddle. It also took a couple pots of rice for the new plastic smell to go away. You'll find that happens when you cook other items as well, as I had beef scented rice after cooking some beef soup with the slow cooker function.
The liquid level restrictions of the pot don't make this an ideal slow cooker for a family of 3 or more. If it's just you and one other person, this might make just the right combination appliance of rice cooker and slow cooker. Just don't slow cook a dish that you want to serve with fresh rice. :)

(More customer reviews)When some friends gave this little steamer to my husband & me almost 10 years ago, we thought it was a dumb idea! "What do you need a whole separate appliance like this for?" we laughed. After all, we assured each other, we had a complete set of pots & pans, running water, etc. We thought this was just a silly affectation. We were wrong. We finally decided to use the steamer when our friends were coming to dinner, cooked some broccoli in it and....had our revelation. That night the broccoli was crisp, bright green & "al dente" after 12 minutes of steaming. In other words, "perfect." So was the asparagus we steamed the next night, the rice we steamed the night after that, and so on.
1001 nights later, having used this handy little appliance almost each & every night, we finally had to admit that we'd been wrong, completely wrong, totally wrong! This is no affectation! Not only did our vegetables, rice, couscous, etc. come out perfectly every time, steaming preserved their nutrients & this little steamer was incredibly easy & convenient to use. I've even used it to sterilize my younger child's bottles & to steam foreign stamps off envelopes for my son's collection. The only small appliance we all use more frequently is our electric kettle! This steamer's compact size, however, makes it easy to store & all of its plastic bowls/covers/baskets fit easily in the diswasher for easy after-dinner clean-up. After nearly 10 years it still works as well as it did that first night!
You need this steamer. You may not realize it till after you've owned it for a bit, but if you don't find yourself discovering multiple uses for it, well, your imagination is lacking!

(More customer reviews)This is my first rice maker and I love it! Much better than making it on the stove in a pot. The first rice I made in this was a brown rice, wild rice mix. It turned out perfectly. I even forgot to rinse it first, and I did not soak it like the directions required. The machine did not boil over. I just used an extra 1/4 cup water for each cup of rice I added. I also added in a small amount of butter. No sticking, no burning - just perfect rice. I also like that the removable pot is aluminum and not coated with toxic non-stick materials. The clean up was easy. For the price, compared to higher end models, I would recommend this rice maker/steamer to anyone.
